A violin in its open case. The bow rising on its own, hovering above the strings.
First service
A stainless steel kitchen pass, lights low. A single porcelain teacup. Steaming.

What does the body remember about the sea?
Open water
A swimmer mid-stroke. The whole sea behind her, a single arm above the surface, the moment before the next breath.
Salt above a tomato
A pinch of salt suspended in light. The tomato unaware. The kitchen quiet.
Glass tide
Tide receding from sand the color of pearl. Footprints already gone.
The cube
A single ice cube in a glass at noon. Sunlight stopped on its way through.

When does intensity stop performing?
Ember peppers
Red peppers cooked direct on coals. Skin blackening. The hand not yet present.
The warmdown
A runner walking, slow, the stadium nearly empty, light gone amber.
Held organ
A cathedral. A single organ note sustained. No congregation.
Asphalt shimmer
A road in summer. Heat made visible. The horizon trembling.

What is the held breath made of?
Peak of arc
A high-jumper at the apex of motion. Body almost weightless. Bar untouched.
After the chord
A concert hall after the final note. The silence still sounding.
Geostationary
A satellite at the same point in the sky for the whole night.
The feather
A single feather in mid-fall, lit from below. The room around it gone.

How do beginnings begin again?
Preseason
An empty pitch at dawn. Dew. The first whistle has not been blown yet.
Mise reopened
A kitchen at 4pm. Lights coming up. The pass set for service.
First rehearsal
A drum kit, a guitar leaning, the bass not yet picked up.
Geese
Geese in formation, low across a field. Muscle memory.

Who lives in the doorway?
Spilling light
A doorway. A room beyond, lit. The figure standing on the threshold uncommitted.
Long road dusk
A road at the hour the streetlamps choose. Half headlight, half candle.
Tunnel
A football tunnel before walkout. The crowd a sound, not a picture.
Count-in
Sticks held above a snare. The drummer's eyes closed.

Can strength be quiet?
Held lift
A barbell overhead, locked, breath held. The room watches without moving.
Whisk tendon
A forearm whisking. The tendon flexing. Cream beginning to fold.
Cellist's bow
The weight in the bow arm. The string remembering it.
Tree in wind
A tall tree in a strong wind. Bending, never breaking.

Snow on snow
A tennis court in winter. Net still up. Snow on the lines.
Empty cathedral
A nave at dawn. No one. The light arriving anyway.
Pre-dawn pool
A swimming pool at 5am. Lane lines straight. The water unbroken.

A single match held above its box. Anticipation made physical.

Horizon at six
A coastline. The horizon line. The day deciding.
The first stroke
A swimmer entering open water. The first reach. The cold negotiated.

A turntable. The needle dropping. The first second.

Earth from low orbit. The terminator line moving.

Where is the work that is never seen?
5am gym
A weight room. Breath visible. The clock on the wall reads 5:07.
Baker's hands
Flour, water, four in the morning. The dough not yet a loaf.
Tenth take
A studio. The same line again. The take that will be kept is still ahead.
Worn glove
A leather glove on a bench. Sweat-darkened palm. Fingers shaped to a grip.

How does ice decide?
River ice
A river. The first hairline. Sound before sight.
First match
A pitch in early spring. First whistle of the season. Mud, light, breath.
Held note breaking
A long sustained note. The moment it opens into a chord.
Seed splitting
A seed in soil. The root deciding which way is down.

What does mastery look like when it stops hiding?
Magnolia and stadium
A single magnolia in full bloom against an empty stadium at dusk.
Held trophy
A trophy in mid-air, hands receding from frame. The crowd a blur.
Plated once
A dish photographed once and never again. Steam still on the rim.
Final cadence
A string section bows lifting. The room about to exhale.
